Song of the North (Brunuhville, 2015)

(One of ) the longest song in my favorites, standing at an impressive 11 minutes long! What makes this song so good, you ask? I say that the medieval theme of this is quite nice, and the vocals create a really cool feeling. The flute and all the instruments contrast against modern day beats, and make you really get into the mood. There is no true chorus to dominate your ears, so this song won’t annoyingly get stuck in your head. Although it has few words, they are meaningful and yet still mysterious:

A raven flies into the moonlight
The cold snow storm
He knows the message has to arrive
The kingdom will burn to the ground.
The witches and demons have come to deny
The beauty and peace of our home land
We know the message has to arrive and
The King of the North will rise.
With the incredibly long “intro” accompanying this, I can really see the imagery, the raven delivering the inferred scroll, the monsters arriving, yet the hope that “the King of the North will rise”. With fast sections, slow sections, and creative use of old instruments, even while being a modern song, this is surely an outlier compared to my normal pop songs. No doubt this song deserves a 100! May we hope I stumble upon my other 10+ minute song soon….
As for Brunuhville himself, he’s not a one-hit wonder, but the other songs of his are too long or not really my style. Due to this song’s great length, it is one of the few songs I can listen to everyday and not get tired of. It is also the second longest song overall in my favorites list, surpassed only by Shine On You Crazy Diamond.
2023 re-review: The song tends to repeat many melodies a lot of times, thus beginning to pale against Shine On Crazy Diamond. It’s a shame — it had a good chorus. Final rating: 89/100
