Vanilla Twilight (Owl City, 2010)

How fantastic, a song without a chorus (unless you consider the instrumental the “chorus”, but even then this song doesn’t really have a vocal chorus)

I’m a big fan of Owl City because of his voice giving his songs this kind of feel, the nostalgia, or fun, or whatever Adam’s trying to convey. Regardless of his song, it always gives off a light happy feeling, and you can tell from the lack of sad songs in his arsenal. I love the various lyrics in here, “the stars lean down to kiss you”, “heavy dose of atmosphere”, “violet eyes grow brighter”…. they’re all so ingenious. Despite being sparse, the lyrics provide a very nice complement to the video as everyone watches the sky in awe. We can presume that “vanilla twilight” can also represent snow a little bit. Even though the song is about him being separate from his high school love, it provides an unusual sense of intimacy contrasting with his loneliness. The lyrics “cuz the spaces between my fingers are right where yours fit perfectly” especially stresses his love for her, and it’s just so well made, conveying feeling and meaning equally well.

So overall, 92/100. This song is fantastic and a good break from all my pop and rock songs.
