Jennifer Lawrence – Hanging Tree

Though the lyric structure is very repetitive– essentially the same verse repeated 7 times– the orchestral build-up combined with creepy lyrics work well in combination. Each verse begins with “are you, are you, coming to the tree”, then a story is told that a man was murdered then hung. It turns out the song is from the perspective of the murderer. The line “necklace of rope” (or, the modified version, necklace of hope) is pretty cool. They then change the order of the verses, firstly telling the 3rd verse, the 1st verse, then the 1st verse.

Overall, the song has a very cool feeling to it. Despite the repetition, the difference in background music and dramatization prevents the song from getting dull. Good song.
